This is the third installment of the 2023 Rizing Tide Lighthouse Series: a series of blogs and video interviews that spotlight our exceptional scholars. Stay tuned for the next installment!

In the bustling halls of North Central College, Emmanuel Noye, affectionately known as Manny, stands out not just because of his warm smile and affable demeanor, but also because of his remarkable journey as a trailblazer in his family. A first-generation college student, Manny is fueled by his passion for physical therapy and a deep-seated commitment to his community—thus paving the way for future generations.

Manny’s path toward a physical therapy career began with a profound personal experience. “I remember vividly the moment when my childhood friend, Emmanuel, faced a critical health challenge,” Manny says. The health crisis required his friend to seek out a physical therapist, thus sparking Manny’s interest when he witnessed the dedicated care his friend received during recovery.

Driven by a blend of compassion and curiosity that was cultivated through his own sports experiences, Manny found himself increasingly drawn to learn about the resilience of the human body. “Growing up playing sports, I often wondered about the healing process after injuries. It fascinated me how physical therapists could facilitate recovery and help athletes return to peak performance,” Manny says.

When it came time to pursue his doctorate in physical therapy (DPT), he selected the physical therapy program at North Central College due to his deeply rooted personal values and professional aspirations. “Being close to my family in Chicago was a priority. North Central’s new program not only offered proximity, but also a supportive environment where faculty prioritize student success,” Manny says.

Looking back and reflecting on his academic journey, Manny shares a valuable lesson he learned early on: the importance of seeking help. “During undergrad, I struggled with my anatomy course initially. It was a humbling experience to realize that asking for assistance was not a sign of weakness, but a step towards growth,” Manny says. This mindset shift propelled him forward, leading to academic success and reinforcing his belief in the power of community support.

After recently winning a Rizing Tide Crest scholarship, Manny is poised to expand his network and deepen his impact within the physical therapy field. “The scholarship provides an invaluable opportunity to connect with mentors and peers who share my passion. I look forward to learning from their experiences and integrating their insights into my professional journey,” Manny says.
